A Beautiful Thing

In the basement I have a wall of jerseys. Some of my own and the rest from friends who made it to the big show, and riders I've coached, listened to when the dream seemed more like a nightmare or members of "the family" who hoovered A's great cooking while they were passing through. Team jerseys, Leaders jerseys and Championship jerseys with notes scribbled across them in permanent ink. They remind me that while sport has a short memory, often only noting the winner in the record books, the lessons learned by athletes last a life time.

Today Steger stopped by to give me a jersey he recently won. He insists it is for me to wear when I can ride again after the rehab. After returning to the new job, and after adapting to having a kid all settle down and I go for a ride because as he so bluntly put it, "a bike ride is a beautiful thing."
