The Secret Cough

Two weeks ago, Trike had a nasty cough. Like he had a lugie in the back of his throat he just couldn't bring up. This went on for two nights before A took him to the Vet. A friend of mine, in his infinite wisdom of all things (this time K9) said to just give Trike some Robitussin. Trike and A came home with antibiotics for Bronchitis, more commonly known as Kennel cough. How does a dog who mostly sleeps all day get sick? I thought to myself. Regardless, for 7-days, Trike got a spoonful of Adam's Peanut Butter twice a day with two little pills hidden inside each dollop. Not a bad deal.

During this time, Gavin began to mimic Trike when he saw the dog. He's clearly not a dumb kid and showed us his 6-month old communication skills by faking a cough, trying to hork up a lung.

Most evenings I give G his bed time bottle and normally Trike would share my lap with him. Gavin would grip the back of Trikes neck or reach for his ears while sucking down his formula. Tonight, he drank from his bottle a little, sat up, looked around, then coughed. He'd look around a little more, lean back, suck on the bottle, then sit up and cough again. Eventually the bottle was done, but no Trike. Just Gavin giving the secret cough and looking around for an answer.

I heard a story about a mom who worried about her little boy, about 4yo. They lived out in the boonies and he had no friends to play with. He spent a lot of time out in the yard with their dog. One day, the mom stepped out on the porch and said, "What are you doing?" The little boy replied, "Oh, nuthin'. Just barkin' at the mailman."

Hugs to you guys, I'm sure you are missing Trike pretty bad.
