The cool, wintry spring this year has been a blessing. But now it is summer. 100 degrees on Saturday. The kind of day one has a hankering for watermelon. A though, has watermelons for feet. 25 more days or so to go!
After graduating from high school with no definite plans for college, I went to work on my grandfather's and uncle's farm in south Georgia. I got there the first of June and left in the beginning of November.
One of their side crops was watermelon. It was 100% cash crop. That meant they could write off the seed, diesel, pesticides, etc. and not report any of the income. Lots of farmers game the system like that.
Anyway, the field was not far from the house. There are so many melons in the field that some just burst before they can be picked. Sometimes I'd head out to the field after dinner (that's lunch for most of you), break open a watermelon and eat the heart. Just the sweet juicy heart. And leave the rest to rot in the field.
Another favorite was to put a melon in a five gallon bucket and fill the balance with ice and water. After a couple hours, I'd eat the melon -- most of it myself.
